Athletics Final 5th March 2015

On Thursday 5th March, our Athletics team took part in the West Yorkshire Sportshall Athletics final.  The final consisted of the best two teams in Leeds, Kirklees, Calderdale, Bradford & Wakefield.
Our team had gone through five gruelling rounds to reach this final so had gained invaluable experience since training had started at the end of September.  Having so many Year 4 children compared to previous years has given this Year Group an additional year of competing at these events.
The event took place in the afternoon and the first hurdle was finding parking space because there were ten different schools with parents/carers attending as space was at a premium.  The children were excited and nervous at the same time but seemed to cope well on the day.  Year six were encouraged to try their best as this would be their final time of taking part in this kind of event in primary school.
As the afternoon wore on, the children really tried their hardest at winning their races or their field events.  After a long afternoon, the results were in and Chapel Allerton came in bronze position (3rd) with 338 points.  The winners (Kirkburton - Kirklees) won by 2 points with a score of 354 from St. Theresa's (352 points) who were also from Leeds.
The children were pleased with their performance considering the strength of the other athletes.  It was a good end to a long but fruitful campaign.
I must say a big thank you to all the parents/carers that offered their time and their cars in getting children to various venues.  The support that parents/carers gave us at the events also helped us do so well.  For the staff, Mr. Cunningham, Mr. Hunjan and Mr. Hylton, thank you for your patience and hard work throughout the months of training and nerve-racking events.   We may do it all again in September!!
